Gift Cards

Payment card test software is the mix of sandbox gateways, reserved test card numbers, and API tooling that lets a developer run a full payment flow without touching a real cardholder account. Gateways such as Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree publish test PANs that validate with the Luhn check and return a scripted result, approve, decline, insufficient funds, or a 3-D Secure challenge. Nothing in the flow reaches a card network, and no money moves.

Card Testing Platform

What the software actually is

A test card is a card number from a range the networks and processors have set aside for development. It passes format and check-digit validation, so it exercises the same parsing, tokenization, and error-handling code your live integration uses. The difference is the endpoint: test keys route the request to a simulator, live keys route it to the acquirer.

Most stacks combine three pieces: a sandbox account with its own API credentials, a set of documented test numbers, and a fixture file or script that feeds those numbers into your test suite on every build.

Card Testing Program Guide

Prerequisites

  • A sandbox or test merchant account with the processor you plan to use in production
  • Test-mode API keys stored in environment variables, never committed to the repository
  • A staging environment that mirrors production configuration
  • Webhook endpoints you control, so you can inspect event payloads

How to set up a test flow

  1. Create a sandbox account with your chosen processor and confirm that test mode is enabled.
  2. Generate test API keys and load them into your staging environment as environment variables.
  3. Copy the processor's documented test card numbers into a fixtures file, one per scenario you plan to cover.
  4. Point your payment form or API client at the sandbox base URL.
  5. Run an approval case first and confirm the response carries a charge ID.
  6. Run a decline case and confirm your application surfaces the decline code instead of a generic error.
  7. Trigger a challenge case and verify your 3-D Secure handling returns control to your app.
  8. Inspect the webhook log and confirm your handler processed the event idempotently.
  9. Add the whole set to continuous integration so every release re-runs it.
  10. Swap in live keys only after the test suite passes on the release build.

Scenarios worth scripting

  • Successful authorization and capture
  • Soft decline with a retry path
  • Hard decline with a customer-facing message
  • Expired card and invalid expiration date
  • Incorrect CVC handling
  • Refund and partial refund
  • Duplicate submission protection
  • Network timeout and retry logic

What test software is not

Test tooling is not a card checker. Submitting real card numbers to a sandbox, or running live PANs through any validation service to see which ones authorize, is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 1029 and a violation of every processor agreement. Sandbox numbers are published openly, tied to no account, and work only against the vendor that issued them.

Compliance basics

PCI DSS applies to any system that stores, processes, or transmits a real primary account number, including a test server someone loaded with production data. Keep real PANs out of staging entirely. If you need realistic data for reporting or analytics tests, use synthetic numbers or tokenized references from your processor. Mask or truncate anything that resembles a PAN in logs, and restrict who can read the raw payloads.
