Latest Joker Movie Overview: Folie à Deux Explained

The short answer

The latest Joker movie is Joker: Folie à Deux. It is the 2024 follow-up to the 2019 film Joker, again directed by Todd Phillips. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck once more, and Lady Gaga steps in as Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. put it in theaters on October 4, 2024. Runtime sits at about 2 hours 18 minutes.

What the film actually is

This is not a straight crime drama like the first one. Phillips built it as a jukebox musical wrapped around a courtroom story. Arthur is locked up at Arkham State Hospital awaiting trial for the murders from the previous film, and much of the movie plays out through fantasy musical numbers and duets. If you go in expecting another gritty character study, you will be thrown. I tell people to treat it as a companion piece, not a sequel in the usual sense.

Cast and crew at a glance

• Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck / Joker
• Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel, called Lee here
• Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz in supporting roles
• Directed by Todd Phillips, co-written with Scott Silver
• Score and song arrangements by Hildur Guðnadóttir and others

How it landed with critics and audiences

Not well, and that is putting it gently. Critics split hard, and the aggregate scores sat far below the 2019 film. Audiences gave it a rough CinemaScore. It picked up a string of Razzie nominations and wins. Box office came in near $200 million worldwide against a budget in roughly the same range, so it did not turn the profit the studio wanted.

How to Find the Latest Joker Movie URL Process

Where the official pages live

If you want a reliable overview rather than a random repost, three domains are worth your time. The Warner Bros. studio site carries the official synopsis, credits, and home entertainment details. IMDb has the full cast list, runtime, and release dates by country. Rotten Tomatoes and Box Office Mojo give you the score and the numbers without spin. Studio pages are the ones that stay accurate after a film leaves theaters. Fan wikis and content farms copy each other and often keep stale release dates for years.

Home viewing timeline

The film left most theaters in November 2024. Digital rental and purchase showed up shortly after, and it reached the Max streaming service that December. Physical 4K and Blu-ray releases followed. Prices vary by retailer and by whether you want the digital code included, so it pays to compare before you click buy.

Quick take

One sentence version: the latest Joker movie is a 2024 musical courtroom sequel that Phoenix and Gaga carry, and most viewers either loved the swing or hated it. There was no middle ground.
