Gift Cards

Short answer

Online CVV validation is not a standalone check you can run. The CVV is validated only when an authorization request goes to the card issuer. You send the card number, expiry, and CVV through a payment gateway, the issuer compares the CVV to the value on file, and it returns a result code. No public API tells you a CVV is valid by itself.

CVV Validation Systems: What They Check and What They Can't

What the issuer compares

Two different values get called CVV. CVV1 is encoded on the magnetic stripe and used in card-present transactions. CVV2, also called CVC2 or CID, is the three or four digit code printed on the card. Online merchants collect CVV2. The issuer holds the expected value and checks it during authorization. If the digits do not match, the issuer returns a CVV mismatch response, and most gateways decline the transaction.

Why you cannot validate CVV alone

A CVV check needs a live authorization against the issuer. Some processors offer a zero dollar or one dollar authorization to test a card, but that is still an authorization, and it appears on the cardholder's account. Any service that claims to validate a CVV without an auth request is either relaying an auth you cannot see or guessing. I would not hand card data to a standalone CVV checker site.

The authorization flow

  • The customer enters card number, expiry, and CVV at checkout.
  • Your gateway encrypts the data and sends an authorization request to the acquiring bank.
  • The acquiring bank routes the request to the issuer through the card network.
  • The issuer returns an approval or a decline with a reason code.
  • Your gateway passes the result back. Under PCI DSS, you must not store the CVV after authorization.

Reading the response

CVV mismatch usually maps to a specific decline code, not a generic failure. A mismatch means the digits did not match the issuer's record. A CVV not processed code means the issuer did not check it, often because the card or region does not support the check. Treat a mismatch as one signal. Pair it with address verification (AVS) and, where required, 3-D Secure. One mismatch can be a typo. A pattern of mismatches from one IP or one card range is card testing.

What merchants should do

Do not retry a CVV mismatch more than once. Repeated attempts look like card testing and can get you flagged. Do not store CVV2 in your database, logs, or support tickets. Use tokenization so your systems never hold the raw value. Turn on AVS for US and Canadian addresses, and use 3-D Secure for high-risk orders. If a CVV validation vendor asks you to upload a list of cards, that is not validation. That is a card testing service.
