Running automated CVV checks against live payment pages is card testing. That is payment fraud, not a development technique. It breaks card network rules, violates federal law in the US, and creates real chargebacks for merchants. I will not walk through how to build or run that kind of setup. What I can do is explain why it gets caught, why it is a legal risk, and what legitimate testing looks like when you are actually building a payment flow.
The phrase gets used for scripts that submit card numbers and CVVs to a merchant's checkout to see which ones authorize. Fraudsters do this after buying card data, often in small batches, to sort live cards from dead ones. The automation part is just speed: bots, rotating IPs, and fake checkout flows. None of that changes the underlying act. You are testing stolen payment credentials against a system you do not own.
In the US, card testing falls under access device fraud and identity theft statutes. Card networks treat it as a violation that can get a merchant's processing account shut down. Even if a test charge is small, the merchant pays chargeback fees, loses the sale, and may lose the ability to accept cards. Issuers flag the BIN ranges involved. I look for this pattern in fraud data: many low-value attempts, rapid velocity, mismatched geolocation, and a spike in declines. It stands out.
Merchants and processors do not need to know your script. They watch behavior. A checkout page that gets hit with dozens of card attempts from one session, or hundreds from a small IP range, triggers rules. Velocity checks, device fingerprinting, CVV mismatch rates, and 3-D Secure challenges all raise the cost of testing. Fraud teams share signals across merchants. The result is that automated CVV testing produces a short window of success and a long trail of blocked cards and closed accounts.
If you are building checkout flows, you use sandbox environments and test card numbers from your payment processor. Those test numbers are published by the processor and never touch a live authorization. You test declines, errors, and 3-D Secure flows in a controlled environment. You do not use real card data, and you do not test against production merchants you do not control.
CVV testing automation is a fraud pattern, not a tool. The legal exposure is real, the detection is mature, and the only safe way to test payment code is through processor sandboxes. If someone is selling you a CVV testing service, they are selling you a way to commit a crime and get your accounts closed.
