Gift Cards

A CVV test web application is a checkout form that runs in a payment gateway sandbox and validates the card verification value against published test card numbers. You use it to confirm the field accepts, rejects, and transmits the code correctly before a real customer ever sees the form.

This guide covers test-mode development work only. It does not cover buying, selling, or trading real card data, and no step below requires a live card number.

cvv verification web

Prerequisites

  • A sandbox merchant account with a payment provider
  • Test-mode API keys, kept out of client-side source
  • A staging deployment with its own database
  • The provider's published list of test card numbers and expected CVV responses
  • Log redaction rules configured before the first test run

Step-by-step

  1. Create a sandbox account with your payment provider and confirm test mode is active.
  2. Generate test-mode API keys and store them as environment variables on the staging server.
  3. Build the CVV input with inputmode="numeric", autocomplete="cc-csc", and a maximum length of four characters.
  4. Point the form action at the sandbox endpoint, not the production endpoint.
  5. Submit a published test card with its matching CVV and confirm the charge returns an approved status.
  6. Submit the same test card with a deliberately wrong CVV and confirm the gateway returns a CVV mismatch decline code.
  7. Map each decline code to a user-facing message that does not reveal whether the card number or the CVV failed.
  8. Inspect application logs, database rows, and analytics payloads to confirm the CVV value never appears.
  9. Repeat the accepted and declined cases in a mobile browser to check autofill and numeric keypad behavior.
  10. Wipe the sandbox customer records and restart the run to confirm the flow is repeatable.

What to verify on each run

  • The field rejects letters, spaces, and values longer than four digits
  • Paste and autofill behave the same as manual typing
  • Declines return a stable error code the front end can branch on
  • The request body never carries the CVV to your own servers when using hosted fields
  • Retry attempts do not silently drop the value or resubmit a stale one

Common failures

  • Test keys deployed to production, which turns a sandbox form into a live one
  • CVV captured in client-side analytics or session replay tools
  • Validation only on the client, so a crafted request skips the check
  • Error text that echoes the submitted value back to the page

Handling live card data

Once you move past test numbers, PCI DSS rules apply. Requirement 3.2 prohibits storing the CVV after authorization in any form, including encrypted storage. Keep the field inside provider-hosted iframe fields or tokenize the card before it reaches your code, and never write the value to a database, log file, or support ticket.
