A CVV test transaction error means a sandbox payment returned a card verification result of mismatch, not present, or unable to verify instead of a match. The card is a test number published by the processor. No cardholder is involved. The error comes from the test setup or from the processor's documented test card behavior.
Card networks return a one-letter result for the verification value in the authorization response, separate from the approve or decline decision. Common values: M (match), N (mismatch), S (not present, the merchant did not send it), U (issuer cannot verify, often because the issuer does not take part in the service), P (not processed). A test transaction with a CVV error is reporting one of these letters, not a fraud event.
CVV Check Transaction Error Guide
Labels differ by processor. Stripe returns incorrect_cvc. Adyen returns a refusal reason in its test responses. ISO 8583 authorization messages carry the network response in field 39 and the verification result in a separate field. Map the label back to the network letter before you debug, because a generic do_not_honor can hide a CVV mismatch.
Processors publish test card numbers for sandbox use. Real CVV values are not distributed for testing. PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 prohibits storing the verification value after authorization, and card network rules bar sharing it with third parties. A CVV list offered for sale is fabricated or stolen. Stolen values fail in a test environment because the sandbox does not connect to an issuer.
