What a CVV test checks

A CVV test confirms one thing: your systems never keep the card verification value after an authorization completes. Under PCI DSS, the CVV, CVV2, CVC2, and CID are sensitive authentication data (SAD), and Requirement 3.2.1 forbids storing that data after authorization in any form, encrypted or not. The test hunts for the value in every place a transaction touches: databases, application logs, web server logs, message queues, error traces, browser storage, monitoring tools, and vendor payloads.

CVV Test for PCI DSS: A Comprehensive Guide

A passing result means you can show a specific test card value entered in one place and an empty search result everywhere else.

Prerequisites

  • Approved test plan naming the systems, channels, and dates in scope.
  • Gateway-provided test card numbers and a sandbox merchant account.
  • Read access to production-equivalent logs, database, queue, and APM tooling for the test window.
  • A staging environment that runs the same code build as production.

Procedure

  1. Record the start time and timezone for the test window so log searches have firm boundaries.
  2. Pick a test card and note its CVV value exactly as digits, for example 737. You will search for that string.
  3. Run an approval transaction through the card-not-present checkout channel.
  4. Run a decline transaction using a card number that fails authorization, keeping the same CVV.
  5. Reverse or void the approval, then run a partial refund and a full refund on the same order.
  6. Force an error case: submit an expired card and a malformed expiry date against the same CVV.
  7. Grep every application and web server log for the CVV string and for the full track-style pattern around it.
  8. Query each table that stores order, payment, or customer data for columns whose contents match the CVV string.
  9. Inspect message queue payloads, dead letter queues, and webhook bodies sent to fulfillment, fraud, and CRM systems.
  10. Open the browser developer tools and check localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, and response bodies from the payment endpoint.
  11. Check the error tracker and APM tool for captured request payloads from the forced error cases.
  12. Confirm the payment form field is cleared and not cached by the browser after submission.
  13. Record pass or fail per channel and attach the search commands and raw output to the test record.

What counts as a failure

  • The CVV appears in any log line, even at debug level, even inside a truncated payload.
  • A database column, backup, or replication stream holds the value after the authorization response.
  • The decline path writes the submitted card data into an exception record.
  • A third-party fraud or analytics vendor receives the CVV in a request body.
  • The value survives in the browser after the order completes.

Evidence your assessor will ask for

Keep the test plan, the card values used, the timestamps, the exact search commands, and the raw output showing zero matches. Screenshots alone are weak; a reproducible command with a timestamp range is strong. Pair that with a code review note showing where the CVV field is dropped before persistence, and a data flow diagram that marks the point of destruction in the authorization path.

CVV Test for PCI DSS Explanation Guide

Repeat the test after any change to the payment integration, logging configuration, or error handling. Regressions in log verbosity are the most common way a clean result turns into a finding.
