Gift Cards

Short answer

Testing a Mastercard CVV means sending a transaction that carries the three-digit card validation code to a payment processor sandbox, using the processor's published test card numbers, then reading the CVV result code in the raw authorization response. You do not test with a real card number you do not own. A live CVV check belongs to the issuer and the merchant gateway, and keeping or sharing a CVV after authorization violates PCI DSS.

CVV Test Mastercard Details: A Comprehensive Guide

Prerequisites

  • Sandbox account with a processor such as Stripe, Authorize.net, Cybersource, or Adyen
  • Test API keys for that sandbox
  • The processor's published test card list, including at least one Mastercard number
  • A checkout form or API client pointed at the sandbox endpoint
  • Access to the full response payload, not just the success page

Steps

  1. Point your integration at the sandbox base URL and load the test API key into your config.
  2. Copy the Mastercard test number from the processor docs. The common published value is 5555555555554444 with any future expiry date.
  3. Check which CVV values the sandbox accepts. Most sandboxes approve any three digits for a passing test card.
  4. Locate the processor's dedicated incorrect-CVV test card, which triggers a mismatch decline on purpose.
  5. Send a test authorization with the card number, expiry month and year, and the CVV field. Pass the CVV as a normal API field, never in a URL or a log line.
  6. Read the CVV result code from the response payload instead of the overall approved or declined flag.
  7. Rerun the test with the CVV field left blank to confirm your form blocks it before the request goes out.
  8. Rerun with two digits and then with four digits to check your length validation.
  9. Rerun with letters to confirm your input masking and error message behave.
  10. Run the mismatch card and verify your UI shows a clear retry prompt instead of a generic failure.
  11. Confirm your logs, database, and error tracker store no CVV value at any point.
  12. Switch back to production keys only after every CVV path passes.

Reading CVV result codes

  • M: CVV matches what the issuer has on file
  • N: CVV does not match
  • P: CVV was not processed by the issuer
  • S: CVV should have been on the card but was not supplied
  • U: issuer cannot verify the CVV, usually because it does not participate

Common mistakes

  • Treating an approved authorization as proof that the CVV matched. The result code is the only CVV signal.
  • Using a live card number to force a real mismatch. Use the processor's test card instead.
  • Storing the CVV in a debug dump. That breaks Requirement 3.2 of PCI DSS.
  • Testing only the happy path. The decline path is where most checkouts leak revenue.

Scope note: this procedure covers test card numbers in a vendor sandbox. Running CVV checks against real card numbers you did not receive from the cardholder is card testing, it is fraud, and processors will shut the account down.
