What a CVV test framework is
A CVV test framework is a controlled set of test cases, fixtures, and tooling that checks how a payment system accepts, validates, transmits, and reports CVV/CVC results. It runs in a sandbox with processor-issued test cards and test API keys. It does not validate real card numbers, and it must not use CVV data from card marketplaces or any other source of live cardholder data.

Use it to catch integration defects before production: wrong field mappings, bad decline handling, CVV data leaking into logs, and retry logic that sends unsafe repeat authorizations.
CVV Check Setup: A Comprehensive Guide for Safe Transactions
Prerequisites
- Sandbox merchant account and test API keys from your payment processor
- Processor-issued test card numbers and CVV test values
- Written test data policy that prohibits real cardholder data
- Access to gateway response codes and decline reason mappings
- Logging and error handling that can redact sensitive authentication data
Build and run the framework
- Define the scope: list every CVV-related behavior your integration must prove, including input validation, gateway responses, storage rules, and error handling.
- Obtain sandbox credentials from your payment processor and confirm the sandbox does not route to live authorization systems.
- Collect test cards and CVV test values only from the processor's official test documentation.
- Create a test data policy that bans real card numbers, purchased CVV data, and production cardholder data from all test environments.
- Configure logging redaction so CVV values never enter application logs, analytics, error messages, or URL parameters.
- Map each test case to an expected gateway response code and a clear pass or fail condition.
- Implement fixtures for CVV present, CVV missing, CVV malformed, CVV mismatch, and card types that do not use CVV.
- Run the cases against the sandbox and record the request, response code, and redacted payload for each case.
- Assert that CVV data is not stored after authorization and that any displayed result is a normalized result code, not the submitted value.
- Add regression checks for retries, idempotency, and duplicate authorization prevention.
- Review results with security and compliance owners before promoting any change to production.
Core test cases
- CVV present and format valid
- CVV missing when the payment method requires it
- CVV malformed, nonnumeric, or wrong length
- CVV mismatch response from the issuer
- CVV not applicable for the card type
- AVS and CVV combined result mapping
- 3DS challenge and CVV result interaction
- Idempotent retries and duplicate authorization prevention
- Log and error message redaction
Data handling rules
Never use real card numbers, purchased CVV data, or production cardholder data in test. Do not store CVV after authorization. Do not place CVV in URLs, logs, analytics, or error messages. Use only sandbox test values provided by the processor. If your system needs to show a CVV result, show a normalized result code, not the submitted value.

A CVV test framework is a payment security and QA tool. It is not a way to check whether a card number or CVV from a marketplace is valid, and using it that way creates legal, contractual, and PCI DSS problems.
