A CVV test error message means a card verification value check failed in a test transaction. A payment processor sandbox or test gateway returns the message. The message does not come from a live card network.
Processors use different text for the same failure. The decline code identifies the failure.
Test gateways simulate declines. A test card number maps to a result. Stripe test card 4000000000000127 returns an incorrect CVC error. The sandbox rejects the charge and returns a decline code.
The error can also come from a CVV value that does not match the test card. Test cards accept a set CVV. Check the processor test card table before you change code.
Do not use a live card number in a sandbox. Test numbers are in public documents. Test numbers do not move money.
A CVV test error does not prove a card is valid. It does not test a live card. It does not expose a live CVV. CVV data is sensitive authentication data. PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 prohibits storage of CVV after authorization. Card network rules prohibit the sale of CVV data.
Test cards work only in test mode. Production keys reject test cards. Test mode does not charge a card. A CVV test error in test mode has no effect on a live account.
