Gift Cards

Short answer

A CVV test and a 3D Secure check are separate steps. The CVV is the 3 digit code on the back of a card, or 4 digits on American Express. The issuer verifies it inside the authorization message. 3D Secure is an authentication step that runs before authorization when the merchant or the issuer triggers it. A transaction can pass one check and fail the other.

What the CVV check does

The card verification value is not stored on the magnetic stripe and does not print on receipts. Visa calls it CVV2, Mastercard calls it CVC2, American Express calls it CID. The merchant sends the value with the authorization request. The issuer compares it to the value on file and returns a match, a no match, or a not processed result. PCI DSS forbids storing the value after authorization.

What 3D Secure does

EMVCo owns the EMV 3-D Secure specification. Version 2 replaced the redirect page of version 1 with an API flow. The merchant sends device and transaction data to a 3DS server, which passes it to a directory server, which routes it to the issuer access control server. The issuer returns one of three results: frictionless approval, a challenge through a one time code, app push, or biometric, or a rejection. The result comes back as a CAVV and an ECI value. The merchant puts those in the authorization request.

Order of events

  1. Checkout collects the card number, expiry date, and CVV.
  2. The 3DS authentication runs.
  3. The issuer returns a CAVV and an ECI value.
  4. The merchant submits the authorization with the CVV and the 3DS data.
  5. The issuer approves or declines.

Common outcomes

  • CVV match plus authenticated 3DS: standard approval path.
  • CVV match plus failed challenge: decline. Liability stays with the merchant in most cases.
  • CVV mismatch plus authenticated 3DS: the issuer can still decline. Visa lists decline code N7 for CVV2 verification failure.
  • 3DS attempted but not completed: the merchant carries liability for fraud.

Testing in a sandbox

Processors publish test card numbers for sandbox use. Some test PANs return a frictionless approval. Others force a challenge page. A sandbox result shows how an integration handles the flow. It does not predict what a live issuer will do, because live decisions use the real cardholder account, the real device data, and the issuer risk rules.

Regional rules

EU and UK payment rules require strong customer authentication on most e-commerce transactions, so 3DS runs on almost every checkout there. The US has no equivalent mandate. US merchants apply 3DS by choice and add it for high risk orders.

Legal limits

Running a CVV or 3DS test against a card you do not own is fraud. US law covers it under 18 U.S.C. 1029, which carries fines and prison time. Card networks monitor merchants for card testing attacks: many small authorizations in a short window. Use sandbox test data for tests.
