Gift Cards

The short answer

There is no legitimate CVV buying site, and the Reddit threads that point to one are not reviews. They are ads, scams, or both. The people posting them are often the shop owners, and the people vouching for them are often the same person on a second account. Buying or selling card verification values is access device fraud in the US, and it carries prison time. I read those threads the way I read a guy selling watches out of his coat in a parking lot.

Why the threads keep appearing

Search results are cheap to manufacture. An operator can register a dozen accounts, post a friendly question from one, answer it from another, and let a third say the vendor is solid. Reddit removes this content all the time, which is why the posts you find tend to be recent and short lived, and why the names that get recommended keep changing. Moderation is reactive. The shop moves to a new domain and a new set of usernames before the old thread is even deleted.

Most of these pitches follow the same beats. Once you know them, they are easy to spot.

  • Free test numbers to prove the shop is real. The numbers are dead, already used, or belong to a card that was reported months ago. The free sample is bait for a larger order.
  • A minimum deposit, paid in crypto, with an escrow claim that nobody outside the shop can verify.
  • Support that replies within seconds until the payment confirms, then goes quiet.
  • Review threads where every account has low karma and posts in the same two or three subreddits.
  • A countdown timer or a limited stock banner. Pressure is the point.

What the law says

In the US, 18 U.S.C. § 1029 covers producing, selling, and trafficking in unauthorized access devices, and a single account number can qualify. Sentences for people who run shops are measured in years, not months. The FBI has been prosecuting carding operations since the dial up era, and the cases that make news are usually the ones where a buyer kept records on a home computer. Buying is not a smaller offense than selling. It is the same statute from the other end.

What happens to buyers

Two things, usually. First, the money is gone. Crypto payments do not reverse, and the shop has no incentive to deliver. Second, the numbers are frequently already flagged by the issuing bank, so even a working looking card declines at checkout, and the merchant logs the attempt. A cluster of declined card not present transactions tied to one IP address is exactly the pattern fraud teams look for.

If your own card data was exposed

You do not need a shop to check whether a card is live. Call the number on the back of the card, freeze it, and let the issuer reissue. Report the loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. Both feed the same investigations, and the reports are what let banks spot a breached processor early.

If you landed here by accident

People searching for these shops are sometimes merchants whose payment processing got shut off and who are looking for a workaround. That workaround does not exist. The legal path is a new processor, a cleaner chargeback ratio, and a real conversation with an underwriter. It is slower and it is boring, and it will not end with a subpoena.
