Gift Cards

Short answer

I can't write a buying guide for CVV data. A CVV is a security code the card network issues to the cardholder to prove the physical card is present. Buying, selling, or running a 4 digit test against a card you do not own is card fraud, not shopping. If you arrived here because you saw a 4 digit code on your own card, that is normal: American Express prints a four digit card identification number, while Visa, Mastercard, and Discover use a three digit value.

What the 4 digit code actually is

On American Express cards, the code sits on the front, above the last digits of the account number. Everyone else puts three digits on the back in the signature panel. Both are called the card verification value or card identification number, and both exist for one reason: to reduce fraud when the card is not swiped or tapped in person.

If you are building or testing a checkout page

Do not test with real card numbers you found somewhere. Payment processors publish sandbox card numbers with matching test codes for development, and those are the values to use. Your form should accept three digits for most brands and four for American Express, and it should never write the code to a database, a log file, or an order record after the authorization response comes back. PCI DSS treats that value as sensitive authentication data and forbids storing it post authorization.

If you are a cardholder

Look at your own physical card. The code is printed, not embossed, and it never changes. No bank, processor, or support agent will ask you to read it out over chat or email, and no legitimate service sells a working code to a stranger. Anyone offering to sell or validate CVVs is selling stolen payment data, and using it carries criminal liability along with chargebacks and closed accounts.

FAQ

Is a 4 digit CVV fake?

No. Four digits is correct for American Express. Three digits is correct for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

Can I generate a test CVV?

Only inside a processor sandbox with published test cards. A code that passes a length check tells you nothing about whether a real account exists, which is precisely why the check is not a validation method.

Why do some forms reject my 4 digit code?

The site likely hard coded a three digit rule. That is a bug in their form, not a problem with your card.
