Gift Cards

The short answer

If card testing is hitting your store, the first purchase to make is not a chargeback alert subscription. It is authorization-level screening that stops the test transactions before they turn into disputes. Card testing is the practice of running batches of card numbers through a checkout to learn which ones still authorize, usually with small or repeated orders. Each test costs you little on its own. The bill arrives later as chargebacks, network program fees, processor scrutiny, and a degraded approval rate for your legitimate customers. Buy detection first, buy dispute recovery second, and treat recovery as insurance rather than a fix.

What to look for in a card testing defense stack

Pre-authorization screening

The decision has to happen before the authorization request leaves your system, or at least before you capture. Tools that only review orders after settlement are recovery products, not prevention products. Ask what signals the vendor evaluates and whether you can see them in a test mode before they affect live traffic.

  • Device and browser fingerprinting that survives cookie clearing
  • IP reputation, proxy, VPN, and hosting-provider detection
  • Velocity counting across card, email, phone, device, and IP in the same window
  • Behavioral signals such as form fill time, paste events, and field order
  • BIN and issuer lookups, including prepaid and virtual card ranges
  • Step-up authentication through 3D Secure when risk crosses a threshold

Rules you can tune without a vendor ticket

Card testing patterns shift within days. A rules engine you control, with versioned changes and a shadow mode, matters more than a long list of preset rules. Check that you can write a rule against order value, item count, shipping and billing mismatch, account age, and repeat attempts on the same card.

Dispute and recovery layer

Once tests convert to disputes, you need intake, categorization by reason code, evidence collection, and representment workflow. Look for alert networks that let you refund before a dispute is filed, automated evidence assembly, and reporting that separates fraud disputes from other reason codes. Ask whether the vendor charges per alert, per dispute, per transaction basis points, or a platform fee, and model your cost at your current volume rather than at the vendor's sample volume.

Parameter bands that matter

  • Screening latency: a few tens of milliseconds at the median, with a hard ceiling under a quarter second, since checkout abandonment rises fast beyond that
  • False positive rate: measure it on your own traffic. A tool that blocks one legitimate buyer for every fraudster it stops will cost more than the fraud
  • Dispute ratio: network monitoring programs have historically flagged merchants near 0.9 percent of transactions with at least 100 disputes a month, and near a 1.5 percent band under the acquirer-level programs. Both networks revise these, so confirm current figures with your acquirer
  • Coverage: every card brand, wallet, and payment method you accept, not just the largest two
  • Data handling: cardholder data scope should stay out of your environment where possible, which keeps your PCI DSS assessment smaller

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Buying recovery only. Alerts and representment reduce losses but do not stop the enumeration traffic that caused them
  • Treating a CVV or address mismatch as proof of fraud. Attackers who hold full card data will pass those checks, while real customers mistype
  • Blocking by country or BIN range. This is fast, cheap, and it turns away paying customers in the same ranges
  • Ignoring approval rate as a metric. A system that blocks aggressively will look effective on fraud and expensive everywhere else
  • Skipping a pilot. Run any new tool in shadow mode for a full billing cycle before it can decline live orders

FAQ

Do I still need chargeback alerts if screening works?

Yes, at a lower tier. Screening cuts the volume of test transactions that reach settlement. Alerts still help with the fraud that gets through and with disputes unrelated to testing.

Does 3D Secure stop card testing?

It shifts liability for authenticated transactions and raises the cost of testing for attackers, but it does not eliminate it. Pair it with velocity limits rather than relying on it alone.

How quickly can I tell a tool is working?

Watch authorization attempt volume, decline codes, average order value, and dispute counts on a weekly basis. A drop in small-value attempts with a stable approval rate is the signal you want.

Build or buy?

Build only if payments are core to your product and you have a dedicated risk team. For most merchants, buying screening plus a recovery service costs less than maintaining models and rules in house.
