Gift Cards

Card assessment is the process of checking a payment card's validity, status, and risk before you accept a charge. It answers three questions: is the card real, is it active, and does the data match what the issuer has on file. For most businesses, that means format checks, issuer authorization, address verification, CVV matching, and fraud scoring. No single check is enough, but together they cut risk.

Card Audit: What It Is and How to Run One

What card assessment covers

A full assessment looks at the card data and the context of the transaction. The basics include:

more on this topic

  • BIN and format checks: confirm the number length, prefix, and checksum. This catches typos and fake numbers.
  • Expiration check: a card that expired last month is not valid, even if the number is real.
  • CVV/CVC verification: for card-not-present transactions, the issuer can confirm the 3- or 4-digit code. A mismatch is a strong fraud signal.
  • Address Verification Service (AVS): compares the billing address you collect with the issuer's record. Partial matches are common. Full mismatches raise risk.
  • 3-D Secure: adds an authentication step with the issuer. You see fewer chargebacks, but conversion can drop.
  • Velocity and behavior checks: too many attempts on one card, one IP, or one device in a short window.

Why it matters

Card assessment protects revenue and keeps you inside card network rules. A merchant that ignores CVV and AVS results tends to see more chargebacks. Too many chargebacks can lead to fines or losing the ability to accept cards. Compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS also require you to protect cardholder data and limit what you store.

Card Evaluation Guide: How to Buy CVV or Sell CVV Safely

How a real assessment runs

At checkout, your payment gateway sends an authorization request to the issuer. The issuer responds with an approval, a decline, or a referral. The response includes codes that tell you what matched and what did not. A CVV mismatch is different from insufficient funds. Treat them differently. A soft decline may be worth a retry. A hard decline or a CVV failure is not.

  1. Validate the card number and expiration locally.
  2. Send the authorization request with CVV and AVS data.
  3. Read the issuer response code and your fraud score.
  4. Decide: approve, decline, or ask for more verification.

In practice, I look for a clear match between the card data, the issuer response, and the customer's behavior. A clean authorization with matching CVV and AVS still gets a second look if the order is large or the shipping address is new.

What card assessment cannot do

No check proves a card is safe. A card can pass CVV and AVS and still be stolen. Fraudsters adapt, and friendly fraud exists. The goal is not perfect certainty. The goal is consistent signals, clear rules, and a review process for edge cases.

A note on buying and selling card data

If you are looking at card assessment because you want to buy or sell card numbers, CVVs, or full card data, stop. That is illegal in the US and most countries. It is not a grey area. Legitimate card assessment happens on the merchant, processor, and issuer side to prevent fraud and protect cardholders.
