A CVV is the three or four digit code printed on a payment card. It exists to prove that whoever is entering the card number holds the physical card. Only the cardholder, or a merchant acting with the cardholder's consent, has a lawful reason to use that code. Every listing, forum post, or chat message that offers to sell you a CVV is offering stolen financial data or running a scam against you. There is no registered vendor, no escrow service, and no customer support channel that can make the transaction lawful.
Search engines and payment processors block these listings for a reason. The data being sold was taken from real people, and the money you spend goes to criminal networks that also traffic in account credentials, SIM swaps, and ransomware access.
Buying card data is not a gray area. Federal prosecutors treat it as access device fraud under 18 U.S.C. 1029, which carries prison terms that scale with the number of cards and the dollar amount involved. When the purchased data belongs to a real person and is used to take money or goods, 18 U.S.C. 1028A adds a mandatory two year sentence that runs consecutively to any other count. State laws on identity theft and computer fraud stack on top.
Trafficking is charged the same as using. A person who buys a batch of card numbers and never successfully charges one can still face counts for each number in the file.
If your card data is already circulating, ask the issuer for a new number rather than waiting for the next fraudulent charge.
